SHIELD™ introduces thermal mass to the attic space, enhancing performance beyond what insulation alone can achieve.
Current industry offerings for the attic space rely on static laboratory R-Value ratings, leaving significant real-world performance on the table in the harshest environment of the home. Materials such as brick, concrete, and adobe allow floor and wall assemblies to achieve an elevated “Mass-Enhanced R-Value” compared to their laboratory-tested “Nominal R-Value” ratings by stabilizing temperature fluctuations.
“Mass-Enhanced,” “Dynamic,” and “Effective” R-Values are synonymous terms used to describe the combined thermal performance of assemblies that incorporate both conventional insulation and thermal mass. Mass-Enhanced R-Value is used for performance modeling and is not intended to replace building code R-Value requirements.

Traditionally, SHIELD™ is installed as an overlay above a home’s existing insulation. We work closely with our Certified Installers to evaluate each home and determine the appropriate approach - in some cases, conventional insulation upgrades may still be recommended. While SHIELD™ is not a direct replacement for insulation, it is often chosen over simply “adding more of the same” when elevated home performance is desired.
